Here I am 03:46
Standing on the corner with a suitcase in my hand. Never thought I'd leave this town, but here I am. Life is full of crossroads, of corners to be turned, ladders to climb, bridges to be burned. Wind-made waves in a sea of maize, a cobalt field of sky. Confined to the quarters of my heart, with an arrow in my eye. Drive out there to where she lives, turn off the road blind, to see her standing at the door, one last time. I am reaping, reaping the crops I have sown. I am leaving, leaving the land I have known. There is nothing to me now, but the vacuum that I hide. As we sit by the willow tree, she says goodbye. Headlights caress the road ahead, the steering wheel held tight. The vision of her standing there, in silence and in sunlight. Stretching out across the land, there is no need to look. That's the state I'm living in, the title of the book. I know one day the lines will fade, I know it won't be soon. Until that time she lingers on, the hounds are baying at the moon. I am reaping, reaping in the crops I have sown. I am leaving, leaving the land that I have known

Stick with me. Remember, safety in numbers. No need to speak. Let the stars sit on the sill, and sing the lullabies we know so well. Stick with me. Remember, safety in numbers. Safety in numbers, a golden rule of mine. Safety in numbers, tried and tested over time. Safety in numbers, is wanting such a crime. Safety in numbers, stick with me tonight. Thick as thieves. Close as two peas in a pod. Between you and me. Not even the shirt upon my back. All bets are placed, and the croupier is a crook. Stick with me. Remember, safety in numbers. Safety in numbers, it's a fact of life. Safety in numbers, we are burdened with to survive. Safety in numbers, our oars against the tide. Safety in numbers, our pity and our pride. Let the stars sit on the wire and contemplate in wonder, this night together, two wandering souls, looking for a place to lay down their bundles. The sun has made a Rothko sky, we are alive. Stay with me, because the world has gone to war, and left us behind, for a wasteland and bugle call. Warm my side, until the sun steams over that hill. Stay with me, remember, safety in numbers. Safety in numbers, across the Great Divide. Safety in numbers, and this, my guiding light. Safety in numbers, can't seem to make it on my own. Safety in numbers, stick with me tonight.

Who 04:26
Who rocks the boat, who pulls the strings, unleashes the dragons, and makes the butterfly wings. Who unlocks the gate to release the spring, and who pulls the plug on all those pretty things. Who, who am I, to ask these questions, to rummage and pry. Who turns the tide, who twists our fate, throws us the keys, then rattles at the gate. Who carves love's curves, and plucks at my lyre. Who makes the matches and stokes this fire. Who, who am I, to ask these questions, to rummage and pry. Who fills the coffers, who works the till, bathes us in riches, then sends us the bill. Who measures the plank, and who beats the big drum, who drives in the nails, when the time has come. Who, who am I, to ask these questions,to rummage and pry.

Boat 05:20
When the night is long and filled with yearning. The relief you seek, won't come with morning. The moon swings low, and you start to wander, along a coast you have never seen. When you forget the things you are needing, and the days have lost that special feeling. As time slips by you need it more than ever. You need a boat in stormy weather. When the fog sets in all over town, and gets you thinking of those you've known. A hand you held, some nightlong tryst, the who and what that became of this. When you forget the things you are needing, and the days have lost that special feeling. As time slips by you need it more than ever. You need a boat in stormy weather. With these years I'll build a boat to fill with dreams and the things we wrote. Out from the shore if the wind is right, you'll see a star, that is my light. When the sky is dark, and you hear the thunder. Yet the place to be, is out there yonder. And the moon swings low, and you start to wonder, why you are not where you're supposed to be. When you forget the things you are needing, and the days have lost that special feeling. As time slips by you need it more than ever. You need a boat in stormy weather. With these years I'll build a boat. I'll hone them down, and hollow them out. I'll build it strong and build it fine. Across reach we will glide. With these years I'll build a boat to fill with dreams and things we broke. Out from the shore if the wind is right, you'll see a star and that is my light.

Saving grace 03:02
Across those plains, wind on my face. I come upon, my saving grace. I need to explain, just how it moves me, and improves me, the saving grace. So many roads, so many ways to take, to lose yourself, or discover your fate. Even walking in the boulevard, explains how it moves me, and improves me, the saving grace. If the grass is greener on the other side,I'll tell you about it the day I die. If the heart is such a perfect tool, to shape a world, for me and you. I've been working all night, working all day. Come up with nothing but the saving grace. I need to explain, just how it moves me, and improves me, the saving grace.

Down on the low land there is a bridge to cross, and the water flows as white as milk across the cold hard rocks. The road is like a new page, is hidden under snow. My dog dances on the air, free and happy with what he knows. My dad is walking beside me and it's already New Year's eve. The years coming down the track with this the need to leave. If you fell into that river, that would be the end of you, and I am only thirteen years old yet I know what I have to do. I know we will be happier and that there comes a time to go. that there is a voice that's calling and it's time to tread the snow. They both agree that it's the best for them and that I'll never want or need, that what I must respect just now is this, the need to leave. My heart and I agree on this, I'll always want and need, and what I must respect right now is this, the need to leave. The broken pieces of what we had, I see them in his eyes, as he looks back and takes my hand beneath the bridge the rapids rise. We need a winter to come like this, her white gloved hand to bring. Tomorrow is another day and winter leads to spring. My dog has feet like leather, doesn't feel a thing. His heart is warm and lively, with this, the need to leave. We've got the broken pieces, a puzzle to be solved. One day I'll have a love of my own, more broken pieces to behold. My heart and I agree on this, I'll always want and need, and what I must respect right now, is this, the need to leave.

On my block 05:08
On my block, there is no place to hide. No reason or rhyme, to fit this state of mind. On my block, the snowflakes twist and fall, touch the ground, and pass right through. On my block, the people stop and stare. Even when I know, they don't really see me there. Trees stand proud and bare, in wait for the touch of spring. I know just how they feel, I'm right there with them waiting. I know that what is left, is just a state of mind, the distance over time, the sum of what we find. We calibrate our lives, we measure and divide, and it's weighing on my mind. On my block, jackhammers start at six a.m., interrupt my sleep, to carve out the day again. On my block, the sirens call out in vain. I'm a lucky man, while my spirit intact, remains. The die may well be cast, the stars may well prevail, the course already set, the compass never fails, the risks you want to take, the words you want to speak, the reasons that you give, the promises you make. The parts of you that miss, the angels who depart, the boats that come and go, in the calmness of the port, the light that guides you on, the swelling in your heart, the wind that fills your sail, and the sea you cannot part. On my block life goes on, with you here, or with you gone.

Moonlight on the water, your skin pulling tight. He was so close you could have taken his life. Armour rattling and that matted hair. The miles and years, the heat, the sweat and that broken spear. The sum of it all he cannot understand. The horse makes its own way yet the reins are in his hand. Down the streets of town, nobody pauses to look. At times like these he could be brave as one of those knights in a book. In this wide wide world, moonlight on the water, a warm and gentle stream, and bounded by the dream. Where it all leads he cannot tell. That it leads is all, he comes to that tolling bell. Beware if you should cross him, on your merry way, a desperate man with dragons to slay. Knee deep as the waters gather round, you look out the window and wonder what he's found, that keeps him there like that, scribbling his reams, to see him standing blinded and bounded by the dream. Starlight on the river and your image in his hand. In wide and sleepless nights he dwells, just like the horse he stands. Hey, come over here now, do you have some food to spare, I'm a long way from home, I don't know how I got here. He sits by the fire, his eyes alive with flames, and starts to tell the story, and you're the one he names, the one he's searching for, the one he's trying to lose, the one who left him wandering and bounded by the dream. In this wide wide world, moonlight on the water, a warm and gentle stream, and bounded by the dream.

Distant star 05:27
As the night draws on, I know just where you are. There in my window, I see a distant star. I wake up in the morning, and you are nowhere to be found. To my surprise time wanders on, and with it I am bound. Oh I see, you are near and you are far, above this life I lead, you are a distant star. I search all those pages, I still can't understand. The books go floor to ceiling, in each one I see your hand. As I wander through the maze, I look for crumbs you might have left, such a complicated miracle, such an enigmatic mess. Oh I see, you are near and you are far, above this life I lead, you are a distant star. The traffic flows by, the waves keep coming in. My head full of days spent, and days yet to spend. The phone is always busy, and voices speak your name. The air is full of your words, that haunt me just the same. Oh I see, you are near and you are far, above this life I lead, you are a distant star. The ones who came to visit, your legacy, not mine. The poets and the critics, who gathered by your side. Still the sun climbs up each morning, then slides back down again. I was always your salvation, you are with me to the end. Oh I see, you are near and you are far. Above this life I lead, you are a distant star.
